Zhouzhuang is a Chinese town in Jiangsu and one of China's most popular tourist destinations. It is not the only water township in the country, but it is probably the better-known and oldest one of all. But the beauty of this small town does not end with its special construction and "Venetian" style. It has a great historical past and cultural importance and offers an inside peek of a long forgotten era.
Visitors to the city can view authentic residential houses and a walk through the Old Town offers many fascinating sites. The town has two worth mentioning temples - the Buddhist Quanfu temple and the classical yet breathtaking Taoist Chengxu temple that combines simplicity with real masterworks.
Being a water village or town, rivers and lakes play an important role in the making of its essence. Waterways cross and bar it, surround and protect it, and it determined more than anything else, the town's style of construction, architecture, culture and economy. 14 stone bridges can be found within Zhouzhuang, but the most famous ones are the Twin Bridges - Shide and Yongan. These two amazing structures date from the time of the Ming dynasty. They appear in drawings and stories of Zhouzhuang and are in fact the symbol of the town.
There are many other tourist destinations within the Old Town. However, don't be duped by the crowds of tourist that rampage the area and buy any junk that is offered to them. The magical part of this place is somewhat hidden, but can easily be found if the traveler is willing to seek it. Escape the central streets and go in to the quiet alleys. You'll be surprised at the how quickly you can leave the commercialized hectic touristic atmosphere and ascent into beautiful, peaceful and almost story-like sideways.
